Instead of buying superhero capes and paying premium price, you can just make your own with felt, foam stars, velcro, glue and scissors. You won’t believe how easy it is!
I started out with large pieces of felt. Mine were 18 inches wide and 28 inches in length. You can base the size of your felt on the size of your child. I wanted to buy all red for my sons 4th birthday party so there would be no fighting, but there wasn’t enough so I bought red and black. There was almost no fighting over colors at the party 🙂
Using the first piece of felt to experiment, I folded it in half length wise and cut out a half circle and the folded end. I also cut out a rounded triangle to create the shape of the cape. I then used the cut out shapes to shape the rest of the capes.
I unfolded the felt to reveal the shape of the cape then cut at the tippy top to separate the neck portion. I attached velcro with a sticky back to the neck of the capes and let it set. Don’t worry. The tape won’t come off! It’s stuck for good once you get it on the felt. Why sew when you can stick?!?
Using cheap rectangles of yellow felt folded in half, I cut out ovals and stuck them to top center of the felt using strong double sided tape. In this case, I used Peel n Stick Fabric Fuse. That is some strong stuff!
I covered the back of the felt stars with Gorilla Glue and attached to the yellow felt. At this point, I let the glue set.
And that’s it! My superhero cape was done and I didn’t have to sew a thing! The kids can either wear them as is or decorate them with foam stickers during the party.
