Being a food blogger has some major perks and I just experienced a new one last week! I had the opportunity to judge a burger competition at one of the camps in my neighborhood in Long Island, called Avnet, and I just had to say yes. Seriously, how could I say no to judging a burger competition, right?!? Avnet’s Woodmere Campus, which is just 3 minutes from my house (they also have a campus for the younger kids in Long Beach…right on the beach), serves as a Sports Fraternity for Boys entering Grades 4-8 with its emphasis on Torah, Sports, Midos, Ruach, Special Programs, and weekly, full-day Trips–including overnights. Special Programs include scuba diving instruction, golf, tennis, strength training and conditioning, and woodshop. How cool is that?!? Check out some highlights from the Color War Burgers War competition and scroll to the bottom of this post for one of my favorite burgers of the day!
For the most delicious part of the judging, we went inside the cafeteria where the entire 4th-8th grade boys bunks were eating lunch and we tasted all of the burgers. It was pretty intense since all of the boys wanted to try the burgers and they gathered around us like flies. Remind me never to go back to camp!!! I think I have post traumatic stress from my own days at camp. Ha! The winner of the Color War Burger Wars Competition was Menachem Kunin from the Black Team. Oh, and congrats to the Black Team on winning color war!!! Maybe Burger Wars took it over the top for them…
Since Mordechai and most of the boys didn’t write down their recipes as they made their burgers, which were all packed with flavor, I was excited that one of the competitors, Joshua Greenwald, actually brought a recipe with him! He made one of my favorite burgers of the day so I highly recommend that you make his burger at home! Below is the recipe.
